The Sacramento State men’s soccer team fell 3-0 to the University of New Mexico, on Sunday afternoon at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos are currently ranked 5th in the nation in the Soccer America Top-25 poll.New Mexico is still undefeated with an overall record of 9-0-0 and is also 3-0-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Hornets are 2-7-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the MPSF.
New Mexico wasted little time, scoring its first goal in the sixth minute. Jeff Krause scored his first goal of the game and season when he found his way to the end of a Ricky Francis cross and beat Sacramento State goalkeeper Matt McDougall to the near post.
The Lobos scored 15 minutes later, when Jeff Rowland scored his 11th goal of the season. Rowland’s header from 10-yards out came off a Hans Bevers cross and gave New Mexico an early 2-0 lead.
Krause added his second goal of the game in the 50th minute when he put a loose ball in the box past McDougall.
The Hornets were outshot 23 to 13, but only six of the Lobos shots were on frame.
McDougall finished the match with two saves, while Mike Graczyk also had two saves for the Lobos. Juniors Ricky Rodriguez and Marco Ramirez led Sacramento State with one shot on goal apiece.
The Hornets will begin a four-game homestand and return to Hornet Soccer Field on Friday, Oct. 15th for a 4 p.m. match against San Diego State. It will be the Aztecs last match at Sacramento State as members of the MPSF, after announcing their 2005 move to the Pac-10 earlier this week. The Hornets will complete their first round of MPSF play at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, against UNLV, followed by the women’s soccer team, who will play UC Davis at 4 p.m.
