RHOADS AND RODRIGUEZ LEAD MEN’S SOCCER TO FIRST MPSF VICTORY

10/8/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a match that went back and forth and had a total of seven goals, Sacramento State had the final answer.

In the 94th minute, sophomore Ryan Rhoads scored his second goal of the game to give the Hornets a 4-3 win in overtime over San Jose State (1-8-1, 0-3-0).

Junior Ricky Rodriguez assisted on the goal, splitting Spartan defenders on the left side of the field. Rodriguez sent a through ball to Rhoads, who had made a run into open space in front of the net. Rhoads then placed the shot passed the extended hands of San Jose State goalkeeper Brent Douglas.

It was Rhoads and Rodriguez who also combined on the goal that tied the game at 3-3 in the 82nd minute. Rhoads found his way through the defense, but was fouled in the penalty box before he could shoot. The Hornets were awarded a penalty kick and Rodriguez placed his shot to the lower right corner as Douglas guessed wrong and dove to the right.

The Spartans started the scoring barrage in the 17th minute when the ball was loose in the Hornets’ box after a San Jose State corner kick. Forward Tim McKinney placed the loose ball near post, past diving Sacramento State goalkeeper Matt McDougall.

The Hornets then responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute, when junior midfielder Marco Ramirez placed a shot on goal. Douglas could not control the save and Rodriguez placed the loose ball into the open net.

The Spartans went up 2-1 before the half, when Johnny Gonzalez was left open in the penalty area. Eric Rodriguez sent in a cross that Tim McKinney touched to Gonzalez, who beat McDougall. The Spartans took the 2-1 advantage into the half, but Sacramento State responded just four minutes into the second period.

In the 49th minute, Rodriguez stole a pass at midfield and took the ball toward goal. He once again found Rhoads, who had made a run and struck the ball low far post, past Douglas, tieing the game at 2-2. Before Rodriguez’s 82nd minute penalty kick, the Spartans took a 3-2 lead in the 57th minute. Marvin Sorto’s corner kick flew into the penalty area low and Richard Halvorsen was able to flick the ball near post past McDougall.
