MEN'S SOCCER FALLS 2-1 TO AIR FORCE DESPITE LATE GOAL

Sacramento State opened up Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a 2-1 loss to Air Force, Friday night at Cadet Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore forward Eli Millan scored for the Hornets (1-5-1, 0-1) in the final minute of the match from eight-yards-out, beating Air Force goalkeeper Mike Maynard, but Sacramento State was unable to overcome the Falcons’ two-goal lead.

Air Force (5-2-1, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, when Colin Eames scored his fourth goal of the season. Eames got on the end of a Marcus Sagastume cross and beat Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall from 10-yards out.

The Falcons took a 2-0 advantage in the second half, despite the Hornets taking nine shots compared to Air Force’s seven in the final 45 minutes.

Todd Myers scored a header off a corner kick from Daniel Bolin in the 51st minute. The Falcons had a 6-4 corner kick advantage in the match.

Millan’s goal was his second of the season and was assisted by sophomore defender Utodi Madu. It was Madu’s second assist on the year.

Senior Patrick Nelle led the Hornets with four shots, two of which fell on goal. Junior Marco Ramirez and senior Juan Carlos Cortez, Jr. also had one shot on goal apiece.

Air Force was paced by Eames’ three shots on goal. The Falcons also registered 18 shots compared to the Hornets’ 14.

McDougall had a match-high six saves, while Maynard stopped the Hornets’ offensive attack four times.

Sacramento State will next play at Denver on Sunday at 11 a.m. The Pioneers defeated defending MPSF champion San Jose State 3-1 Friday night, improving the Pioneers record to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The Hornets next home match will be Friday, Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. against the Spartans.
