SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Cal midfielder Nick Hatzke scored in the 89th minute on a penalty kick to give Cal a 2-1 win over Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon at Goldman Field in Berkeley.In the season opener for both teams, the Bears outshot the Hornets 11-0 in the first half. Cal was unable to find the back of the net until the 42nd minute when Yohei Fukuda beat Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall from 12-yards out.
Sacramento State responded late in the game when Cal was forced to foul in the penalty box. Senior David Fraser converted the penalty kick past Bear goalkeeper Eric Kronberg in the 83rd minute to even the score, 1-1. Six minutes later, Cal responded with a penalty kick of its own to pull out the 2-1 win.
McDougall finished the game with eight saves for the Hornets as the Bears placed eight of their 18 shots on goal. The Bears were picked to finish second in the Pac-10 and also received a No. 20 preseason ranking from College Soccer News.
Senior Patrick Nelle led the Hornets with two shots while Mike Munoz led the Bears with four.
Kronberg made one save during the game.
The Hornets travel to Portland this weekend for the Nike Invitational. On Saturday they play Portland and end the tournament on Monday with a game against Gonzaga.
Sacramento State’s home opener is against Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.
