MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS CAL STATE STANISLAUS 1-0 IN OVERTIME

8/22/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State junior midfielder Marco Ramirez converted a penalty in the 98th minute to give the Hornet men’s soccer team a 1-0 overtime win over Cal State Stanislaus during Sunday’s exhibition match at Hornet Soccer Field.

Ramirez, who had possession of the ball at the top of the penalty box, was fouled and brought down by a Warrior defender before he could attempt a shot.

He then converted the penalty kick past Stanislaus goalkeeper Jose Mando Herrera to give Sacramento State the victory.

After 90 minutes of play the match was scoreless despite 13 shots and 10 corner kicks from the Hornets. Midfielder Ryan Rhoads attempted a game-high three shots, two of which were on goal. Ramirez finished the game with two shots on goal.

Herrera was forced to make three saves in the net, while Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall made one.

The Warriors finished the game with four shots, only one of which was on goal. Stanislaus was also forced to play with ten men for the last 18 minutes of the match after Jonathan Domingos was ejected when he received his second yellow card of the game for a dangerous tackle.

Sacramento State will open its season at Cal on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. The Hornets’ first home game will be on Sunday, Sept. 12 against St. Mary’s.
