SAN JOSE STATE ERASES EARLY DEFICIT IN 6-1 WIN OVER MEN'S SOCCER

San Jose State scored two goals in the first half and four in the second as the Spartans defeated the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, 6-1, Friday evening at Spartan Stadium. The match marked the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest for both schools.

The Hornets fell to 2-5-1, 0-1 on the year while the Spartans improved to 4-1-1, 1-0.

Sacramento State got on the board first in the 16th minute when senior forward Sam Sneed converted on a rebound from an attempt by freshman midfielder Ryan Rhoads. Sneed, a native of Park City, Utah, leads the squad with two goals, two assists and six points.

San Jose State evened the contest in the 23rd minute on a penalty-kick goal by Randy Poggio. The Spartans would take a 2-1 lead into the half after a goal by Johnny Gonzalez in the 30th minute. Chris Mackey and Tim McKinney assisted on the score.

Poggio would add his second goal of the contest in the 54th minute off of assists by Richard Halvosen and McKinney.

Jose Flores (64th) and Eric Rodriguez (79th) and Jose Juarez (82nd) each added goals, respectively, to complete the San Jose State offensive output.

McKinney led the Spartans with a game-high three assists.

Sacramento State was outshot in the contest 24-8.

The Hornets will next host No. 10 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. The match is the second of a scheduled doubleheader with the Hornet women’s team.
