Kyle Christianson tallied a game-high two goals to lead Denver to a 4-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win over the Sacramento State men''s soccer team, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.Sacramento State is now 4-9-1 overall and 1-2 in MPSF play while the Pioneers improved to 7-6-2, 1-1.
Denver got on the board first in the 20th minute when Mike Seager passed a short ball to Travis Hendricks. Hendricks received the pass and placed a shot into the bottom left side of the net.
James Merriman put the Pioneers on top for good during the 66th minute of the contest. Working with Hendricks, they combined for a high cross and header to put Denver up 2-0.
In the second half, Kyle Christianson scored two unassisted insurance goals during the 73rd and 75th minute, respectively.
The Hornets struggled to score despite putting seven shots on goal. Pioneer goalkeeper Lami Harmon allowed only one goal during a penalty kick by junior defender Marcos Mercado to the left side of the net. The penalty kick was given to the Hornets after Denver''s Brian Neuer received a red card for a hand ball in the Denver goalkeeper box.
Sacramento State will continue MPSF competition next weekend as the Hornets travel to UNLV on Sunday, Oct. 26, at noon.
