Danny Calderon’s goal in the 33rd minute proved to be the game winner as Cal Poly defeated the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, 2-1, Friday evening at Mustang Stadium. The Hornets fell to 2-2 on the year while the Mustangs improved to 2-1-1.
Sacramento State got on the scoreboard first in the 24th minute as sophomore midfielder Miguel Ramirez headed a ball into the left upper corner off a cross from senior forward Eric Rabbon.
Cal Poly evened the score in the 29th minute on a controversial penalty kick. Mustang forward Ronnie Silva attempted a scissor kick within the Hornet goalkeeper box and drew a penalty after falling to the ground. Mark Jones connected on the penalty in the upper right corner to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Mustangs would take the lead for good when goalkeeper Greg Blevins punted the ball 70 yards into Sacramento State territory. Brian Reed collected the ball and placed a foot on the ball in a crowd of Hornet defenders, springing Calderon for a breakaway. Calderon slotted a 14-yard shot to the left corner to seal the victory.
Sacramento State will next travel to Sullivan Field to face Loyola Marymount on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m.
