Oregon State scored one goal in the first half and two in the second as the Beavers defeated the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The Hornets are now 1-1 on the year while the Beavers raised their record to 2-1.Oregon State scored their first goal of the contest in the 20th minute after a header goal by Christian vanBlommestein. The Beavers’ Ross Duncan began the play with a corner-kick strike from the right side. vanBlommestein and Hornet junior defender Juan Carlos Cortez both went up for the ball but the ball was struck into the top right corner for the score.
The Beavers pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the 63rd minute after an open-net goal by Robbie Findley. OSU’s Ryan Johnson began the play by intercepting a pass at midfield and sending the ball to the left side. Teammate Alan Gordon took the pass and attacked the goal at the left corner. After making senior goalkeeper Jeff Gibson commit, Gordon crossed to the right side for an open net goal by Findley.
Oregon State completed its scoring in the 87th minute when Matt Johnson connected on an open-net goal. OSU’s Chad Bartlome began the play by attacking a ball sent up the left side. Gibson attacked the ball and the deflection went to the left corner. Bartlome collected the pass and crossed to Johnson on the right side for the score.
The Beavers’ Peter Billmeyer earned his first shutout of the season after recording four saves.
Sacramento State will next host Saint Mary’s at Hornet Soccer Field on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m.
