Freshman forward Chris McAlavey’s header goal in the 45th minute erased an early deficit as the Sacramento State men’s soccer team tied Fresno State in an exhibition contest, Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The game marked the first exhibition contest for the Hornets in the 2003 season.Fresno State jumped out to an early lead in the 40th minute after an open-net goal by Dan Oka. A loose ball was knocked around in front of the Hornet goal until the Bulldogs’ Mat Herald placed a shot towards Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall. McDougall corralled the ball but could not control it as the ball bounced away to the right. Oka cleaned up the play with a quick strike to the open net.
The Hornets tied the contest right before the half when McAlavey connected on a goal off of assists by freshmen Ryan Rhoads and Eric Oriz. Rhoads began the play at the center of the field in Bulldog territory and placed a ball down the right sideline. Ortiz crossed the pass on his first touch to the left side of the goal. McAlavey leaped and headed the ball into the right side post for the score.
Hornet senior goalkeeper Jeff Gibson, who played the entire second half, held Fresno State scoreless with a game-high four saves.
Sacramento State will conclude its exhibition season when the Hornets travel to UC Davis on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 4 p.m.
