MEN'S SOCCER TIES WITH UNLV, 1-1, ON SENIOR DAY

Ernesto Carranza scored his 14th career goal as the Hornets tied with UNLV, 1-1, on Sunday.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - On Senior Day at Hornet Soccer Field, the Sacramento State men's soccer team played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against UNLV in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets' record now sits at 6-4-7 (1-2-6 MPSF) while UNLV's mark on the season is 6-9-2 (3-4-2). Sacramento State remains in sole possession of second place in the Pacific Division of the MPSF after Seattle lost 2-0 to Denver on Sunday. San Jose State, the No. 4 team in the Pacific Division tied New Mexico 0-0 on Sunday. Cal State Bakersfield already clinched the division and is in first with Sacramento State in second, Seattle in third and San Jose State in fourth. The Hornets and SJSU meet up on Saturday in San Jose, Calif. for the regular season finale while Seattle plays at Bakersfield on Sunday.
If the Hornets win or tie or Seattle does not win, the the Hornets clinch second in the Pacific Division and an automatic bid to the conference tournament. With the Hornets holding the tiebreaker against Seattle, the only way SU jumps Sacramento State is by a win and a Hornet loss.
In the MPSF Tournament, the top two teams in each division automatically qualify and then the next two best teams make it regardless of division. A total of six teams out of eight overall make the conference tournament.
Against the Rebels, Sacramento State got out to a quick start.
In the 11th minute of the game, Gabriel Silveira crossed a low ball into the box where Ernesto Carranza, one of three graduating seniors honored before the game, connected on a one-touch goal from straight on. It was Carranza's third goal of the season and 14th goal of his career. Paired up with his 16 assists, Carranza took over sole-possession of fourth all-time with 44 career points.
But the Hornets' early goal would not stand as the Rebels tied up the game in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Stephen Sifuentes broke free in the middle of the box and fired a hooking shot low to the far post that just slipped past the outstretched hands of Sacramento State keeper Cesar Castillo. It was only his fifth goal allowed in nine conference games.
It was a physical game as 40 fouls were called and three yellow cards were issued.
As a team, Sacramento State had the edge in corner kicks (6-1), saves (7-5) and fouls (18-22) but UNLV had the advantage in shots (19-15) and shots on goal (8-6).
The Hornets' final regular season game of 2010 takes place on Saturday, No. 6 at San Jose State with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
