ERNESTO CARRANZA NAMED MPSF CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
10/26/2009
WOODLAND, Calif. - Sacramento State junior midfielder Ernesto Carranza was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Co-Player of the Week after leading the Hornets to a perfect 2-0 weekend record with three goals.
Carranza scored the lone goal of the Hornets 1-0 win at Seattle on Friday, as freshman Max Alvarez fed the junior, who connected on a shot from 10 yards out on the left side of the box for his fourth goal of the season.
But he was not done, as Carranza came back to score two goals in Sacramento State’s 3-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon. Carranza improved to 4-for-4 on his career in penalty kick conversions with a PK goal in the match’s second minute, and came back to score on a free kick from the top of the 18 yard box in the 43rd minute.
Carranza has scored goals in the Hornets last three conference games, and scored points in all four of the Hornets MPSF contests, leading the team to a perfect 4-0 record. In two of those games, against Denver and Seattle, Carranza has provided the game-winning goal.
A native of Oakdale, Calif., Carranza is second on the team in points (16), goals (6), and assists (4). The award marks his first career weekly honor.
The Hornets return home on Friday, October 30 to take on the New Mexico Lobos. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
