CARRANZA'S GOAL CONTINUES PERFECT START FOR MEN'S SOCCER WITH 1-0 TRIUMPH OVER SEATTLE

TUKWILA, Wash. - The Sacramento State men's soccer team improved to a perfect 3-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Redhawks on Friday, Oct. 23.

With the victory, the Hornets moved to 7-5-1, 3-0 in the MPSF, while the Redhawks fell to 2-9-1, 1-2 in MPSF play.

After withstanding an early storm of shots from the Redhawks, the Hornets posted the lone goal of the match early in the first half, in the 25th minute. Freshman Max Alvarez fed junior Ernesto Carranza, who connected on a shot from 10 yards out on the left side of the box for his fourth goal of the season, giving the Hornets the 1-0 advantage.

The Hornets looked to have their eyes set on a two goal advantage in the 26th minute, but senior Scott Crandall's header went just high, and the advantage remained a lone goal. Freshman David Norton put a shot on goal in the 38th minute that was saved by Seattle 'keeper Ivan Dizdar, and the score remained 1-0 at the half.

In the first 45 minutes, the Hornets outshot the Redhawks 7-5, and posted a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Seattle stepped up their offensive attack to start the second half, as they posted the first three shots and three corners of the half, but were unable to put a shot on frame. Later in the half, Seattle collecting their only two shots on goal of the contest, as sophomore Bryan Oliver saved Wesley VanHooser's attempt in the 65th minute, and Brandon Hamer's shot in the 80th minute to maintain the shutout.

For the match, the Hornets outshot the Redhawks 16-11, and held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Alvarez and Crandall led the Hornets with four shots apiece, while Carranza posted three shots with two being on frame. Oliver posted his third victory of the season, collecting his second clean sheet with two saves.

Seattle was led by VanHooser's three shots, while Dizdar posted three saves in a losing effort.

Heavy rains overnight forced the match to be moved to the synthetic pitch at Starfire Soccer Complex, which serves as a training facility for the MLS' Seattle Sounders FC.

Sacramento State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 as they travel to Bakersfield to take on the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
