MEN'S SOCCER EXPLODES FOR EIGHT GOALS IN SHUTOUT OF WILLIAM JESSUP

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshmen forwards Max Alvarez and David Norton each scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Bryan Baker added a goal and two assists, as the Sacramento State Hornets defeated the William Jessup Warriors by a score of 8-0 on Sept. 25 at Hornet Field.
With the win, the Hornets stopped a three match slide and improved their record to 4-3-1 on the season. The loss dropped the Warriors to a 1-4-0 mark.
Sacramento State opened the scoring in the 31st minute, as sophomore Adam Bettencourt crossed a ball that was headed by senior Scott Crandall to the awaiting foot of Norton, who connected on his second goal of the season to make the score 1-0.
The Hornets went on to score two more goals in the half, with the next goal coming in the 36th minute, as Baker took a far-post cross from junior Fernando Cabadas and headed it into the back of the net for his first career goal, making the score 2-0. Less than five minutes later, in the 41st minute, Norton found the right foot of junior Raul Rodriguez, who connected on his first career goal to push the advantage to 3-0.
After a slow start to the second half, the Hornets scored three goals in quick succession in the 61st, 62nd and 64th minutes. Junior Ernesto Carranza was the first to connect on a goal, dribbling through a host of Warrior defenders before lofting a left-footed shot to the upper right corner of the next. Next, Alvarez took a lead pass from senior Jason Duvall and connecting on a goal from 10 yards out to give the Hornets a 5-0 advantage.
The lead grew to 6-0 in the 64th minute, as Alvarez connected on a goal off of a direct free kick from 25 yards out.
The final two goals came in the match's waning moments, as sophomore Matt Foy took a cross from Baker and hammered home a shot from eight yards in the 84th minute to push the lead to 7-0. Norton then connected on his second goal in the 88th minute, off of a lead pass from Cabadas to Baker, who in turn found Norton open near the top of the 18.
For the match, the Hornets outshot the Warriors by a count of 33-2, putting 18 shots on frame to William Jessup's one.
Norton led the Hornets with five points, while Alvarez and Baker connected on four points apiece. Alvarez now has seven goals in eight matches, needing one more goal to crack the school's single-season top five.
Senior Nick Gargiulo started in goal for the Hornets, collecting his first career clean sheet while recording one save.
Sacramento State returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 27 as they travel down the Causeway to take on rival UC Davis. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
