ALVAREZ RECEIVES NATIONAL WEEKLY HONOR FROM TOP DRAWER SOCCER

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sacramento State freshman forward Max Alvarez has been named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week for the week ending September 13.

Alvarez struck for two goals in the Hornets 2-1 upset of No. 15 ranked San Francisco on Friday night. A native of Napa, Calif., Alvarez exploded for his fourth and fifth goals of the season to defeat the Dons, who were ranked as high as No. 15 nationally entering the weekend.

In the 35th minute, Alvarez took control of a loose ball in the box and snuck a quick volley past ‘keeper Franco Carotenuto to tie the score at 1-1.
 
In the 39th minute, the Hornets took the lead as junior Ernesto Carranza
fed Alvarez, who blasted a shot from the top of the 18 yard box for his second goal of the game and fifth of the season, giving Sacramento State a 2-1 victory.

Alvarez was one of 11 players earning the weekly honor, with Northwestern’s Matt Eliason earning the website’s player of the week award. Denver’s Alex Tarnoczi was the lone other representative from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on the team.

Sacramento State finishes a four-match road trip with contests at Cal Poly and UC Irvine this weekend. The Hornets face the Mustangs on Friday at 7 p.m. before squaring off with the nationally ranked Anteaters on Sunday at 1 p.m. UC Irvine is currently ranked No. 4 in the Far West region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in their latest poll, while the Hornets rank No. 9.
