ALVAREZ EARNS MPSF CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
9/9/2009
WOODLAND, Calif. - Sacramento State freshman forward Max Alvarez has been named MPSF/Brine Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week, after leading the Hornets to a 2-0-1 record to start the 2009 season.
Alvarez tallied three goals during the first week of competition, including a goal at Saint Mary's last Tuesday that occurred just five minutes into his collegiate career. Alvarez came back to score the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Hornets 4-2 come from behind victory over Alabama A&M. In the 66th minute, Alvarez was taken down in the box by a two-footed tackle by the Bulldogs goalkeeper, leading to both a red card and a penalty kick, which he converted to tie the score at 2-2. He gave the Hornets the lead for good in the 76th minute, successfully terminating a cross off of the foot of junior Fernando Cabadas to give Sacramento State a 3-2 lead.
A native of Napa, Calif., Alvarez leads the team in goals (three), points (six), shots (14) and shots on goal (6). The honor marks the second straight season that a Hornet freshman has earned player of the week honors following performances at the Saint Mary's Tournament. Adam Bettencourt scored his first career-goal against UC Irvine in the 86th minute of the tournament finale last season, earning the Hornets a tie against a team that reached the round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament and lost just twice on the season.
The Hornets return to action on Friday, September 11 as they travel to San Francisco to take on the USF Dons. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
