MEN'S SOCCER FINISHES EXHIBITION SEASON WITH 6-1 TRIUMPH OVER CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshman Max Alvarez scored two goals and added an assist, while junior Ernesto Carranza produced three assists, as the Sacramento State men's soccer team finished exhibition play with a 6-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay at Hornet Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Hornets finish the exhibition season 2-0-0, and will open up regular season play on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Saint Mary's.
The Hornets controlled much of the action in the contest, outshooting the Otters by a count of 20-6 for the match, including a 12-1 advantage in shots on goal. Alvarez opened the scoring in the 28th minute, as after a successful through ball of the foot of Carranza, he chipped the ball over Otter 'keeper Brenden Baca to give Sacramento State a 1-0 lead.
The lead grew to 2-0 as junior Raul Rodriguez fed Carranza in the 40th minute, who crossed the ball to Alvarez who went far post to make the score 2-0. Sacramento State put up one more goal before the half in the 45th minute, as Rodriquez scored on assists from Alvarez and Carranza. The Hornets held an 11-2 advantage in shots in the first half of play.
The second half saw Monterey Bay connect on their lone goal of the game out of the gates, as Nate Torricelli, the Otters' leading scorer from a season ago, chipped Hornet senior 'keeper Nick Gargiulo in the 47th minute, making the score 3-1. The Hornets countered in the 48th minute with a goal of their own, as sophomore Matthew Tellez took a lead pass from junior Fernando Cabadas and found the back of the net to push the advantage back to three goals at 4-1.
Sacramento State closed out the scoring with goals in the 75th and 76th minutes, as freshman Matt Linenberger scored on a blast from the top of the 18, and senior Scott Crandall made good on a penalty kick, accounting for the final score of 6-1.
A physical contest, the match saw a combined 37 fouls and 6 cautions awarded to the two teams.
