MEN’S SOCCER NAMES GREG CURRY ASSISTANT COACH

8/21/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State head men’s soccer coach Michael Linenberger has announced the addition of Greg Curry to the coaching staff for the 2009 season.

Curry comes to Sacramento State from the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, where he was a member of their reserve squad after being selected in the third round of the 2008 MLS draft.  Injuries forced Curry to retire in 2008, and he returns to his home town to begin his collegiate coaching career.

A 2003 graduate of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Curry was a four-year letterwinner at UC Santa Barbara for coach Tim Von Steeg from 2003-07, redshirting the 2005 season. He was a part of the Gauchos 2006 National Championship squad, starting on the defensive backline in both College Cup contests, including the title game against UCLA. Curry was also a key member of the UC Santa Barbara squad that lost in the national final in 2004 to Indiana in penalty kicks.

“We are excited to have Greg join our staff,” head coach Michael Linenberger said. “He has a wealth of experience as a player coming from a perennial top-20 program, and he really knows the game. Greg is a young coach who demands a lot out of players and is going to be extremely helpful to the program.”

Curry was the Sacramento Bee’s 2002 Metro Player of the Year while at Christian Brothers, and was a three-time Sierra Valley League MVP. He returned to the high school ranks, coaching the San Marcos High School varsity girls soccer team, in 2007. Curry has also served as a coach for the California Legends and Santa Barbara Soccer Club at the youth level.
