ADAM BETTENCOURT NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
9/8/2008
WOODLAND, Calif. - Sacramento State redshirt freshman Adam Bettencourt was named MPSF Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 8.
Bettencourt scored the game tying goal against UC Irvine on Friday night at the Saint Mary's Tournament with less than five minutes remaining, giving the Hornets a 1-1 tie. The goal marked the first career points for Bettencourt, who played all 200 minutes of the Hornets two contests, which also included a 2-0 victory over Houston Baptist, giving the Hornets a 3-0-1 start. A native of Hilmar, Calif., Bettencourt has started all four matches during his freshman campaign in the central midfield.
The Hornets are unbeaten through four games for the first time in the Division I era, with the team's previous best marks coming in the 2000 and 2005 seasons when they were both 2-1-1. The team moved up to a tie for seventh in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Far West region poll, the highest ranking the Hornets have ever achieved.
Sacramento State returns home this weekend as they host Menlo College on Friday at 2:30 p.m., before facing Saint Mary's on Sunday at 1 p.m.
