SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Pioneer defender Scott Dixon’s goal in the 118th
minute gave Denver a 2-1 sudden victory against the Hornets in
double-overtime Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field, in the final game of
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference action.
Denver (9-5-2, 5-2-1) got on the board first with a goal in the 35th
minute by forward Matt Harrell off an assist by defender Dag-Christian
Olsen. The Hornets tied it up in the 76th minute on a goal by junior
forward Dave Rios, set up by junior forward Sean Luigs. Dixon then
sealed the game in the second-overtime period.
Hornet sophomore goalkeeper Joey Hills collected a game-high nine
saves in a losing effort.
Pioneer goalkeeper Parker Jarvis finished the contest with eight saves.
Men's soccer ends the 2000 season winning three out of it’s last four
games to earn a 7-10-1 mark overall and a 2-6 record in the MPSF. It is
the best Hornet finish to a season since an 8-10-1 record in 1995.
The team earned it’s first three-game winning streak since 1997 with victories against Cal Poly (1-0), Fresno State (2-1) and Air Force (1-0) through the period of Oct 22-Nov. 3.
Luigs finished the season with team highs in goals (six) and points
(14). Freshman forward David Fraser led the Hornets with four assists
and was second on the team with three goals in his first collegiate
season.
Hills led all goalkeepers with four wins, two shutouts and 51 saves.
Senior defender Sean Melendez set new program records in games played (73) and games started (71) in a career after completing his final game with the team on Sunday. Melendez, an Orange, Calif. native, played four years for the Hornets.
