MEN'S SOCCER TO CLOSE NON-CONFERENCE SEASON AGAINST MENLO

9/26/2007

Game #9: Sacramento State Hornets vs. Menlo College Oaks
Sunday, Sept. 30, Hornet Soccer Field, 2:30 p.m.

AT A GLANCE
Sacramento State will wrap up their non-conference schedule on Sunday as they host the Menlo College Oaks at Hornet Soccer Field. Menlo comes into the week with a 3-4-0 record on the season, posting wins over Cascade College, George Fox University, and Chaminade University. Menlo College, which is located in Atherton, Calif., will travel to Simpson University in Redding, Calif. on Thursday for a game against a conference foe that will not count in the Cal Pac standings. Kristian Hagen leads the Oaks in scoring with eight points on three goals and two assists. Menlo has been outscored by their opponents 13-9 on the season. The Hornets will be without head coach Michael Linenberger, who was given a redcard with 1:41 remaining in the contest against UC Davis.  The caution marked the Hornets first team red card since 2002. The only meeting between the two schools took place in 2005, a 4-0 victory for the Hornets. In that contest, former Hornet Ryan Rhoads posted two goals, including a diving header from a cross by current senior Brandon Baggett.

CAUSEWAY CLASH GOES TO UC DAVIS 3-0

Sacramento State fell to rival UC Davis in a Causeway Cup matchup by a score of 3-0 on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Hornet Soccer Field.
UC Davis came out strong to start the contest, as Paul Marcoux connected on his fourth goal of the season in the 7th minute to give the Aggies a 1-0 advantage that they would take into the half.
Just five minutes and change into the second half, the Aggies struck again as Nicholas Lind found the back of the net to increase UC Davis’ lead to 2-0.  With less than ten minutes to play, UC Davis added another insurance goal as Julien Cerutti scored to account for the final of 3-0.
The Hornets were outshot by the Aggies 18-5 in the match, including 11-5 in the second half. Freshman Fernando Cabadas led Sacramento State with three shots, while juniors Blake Nunes and Omar Martinez added a shot apiece.

HORNETS FALL TO GAELS 1-0
Sacramento State fell to the Saint Mary’s Gaels by a score of 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 21 at Hornet Soccer Field.
The first half was a defensive struggle, as both teams only posted two shots, and neither had a shot on goal. Just before halftime in the 45th minute, junior Kyle Beasley had a header go wide, in what was the Hornets best chance of the half.
The second half started much the same way, as neither team posted a shot in the first 15 minutes of action. Sacramento State then had its best chances of the game, as the Hornets strung together a trio of corner kicks within a 40 second time span in the 61st minute. On the second corner freshman Fernando Cabadas had his header attempt blocked in what was the only shot attempt of the series.
The teams again went back and forth in the midfield until the 76th minute, when David Blanchard was able to flick in a header backwards over Hornet junior ‘keeper Nick Gargiulo off of a free kick cross from Dylan Leslie to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead they would never relinquish.
