FORMER HORNETS MITCHELL AND BAENA NAMED TO THE MPSF 15TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Former Sacramento State players Jamel Mitchell and Kevin Baena were both named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) 15th Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team, it was announced by the conference.
The anniversary team included 12 first team, 12 second team and 12 third team selections that is comprised of current and former players from UCLA, Cal, New Mexico, Cal State Fullerton, Denver, San Jose State, Air Force, UNLV, UC Irvine, Sacramento State, Cal State Northridge and Oregon State.
Both Baena and Mitchell were named to the third team. Some members of the first and second teams included current and former United States National Team members Carlos Bocanegra, Eddie Lewis, Ante Razov, Sasha Victorine, Pete Vagenas, Nat Borchers and Chris Snitko, as well as New Zealand National Team members Andrew Boyens and Duncan Oughton.
Mitchell, who was a forward at Sacramento State from 1993-96, was a three-time all-MPSF selection (first team in 1996, second team in 1994 and 1995). In 69 career games and 49 career starts, he tallied school records in goals (27), assists (17) and points (71). The San Diego native led the MPSF in 1996 with 26 points (10 goals, six assists in 18 games). The 26 points are also tied for the best single-season mark in school history. Mitchell has spent the last 10 years (1997-pres.) playing professionally with stints in both the MLS and A-League (now called the USL First Division).
Baena was a midfielder/forward for the Hornets in 1992-93. A first team all-MPSF selection both seasons at Sacramento State, his career totals are 36 games, 33 starts, 10 goals, 11 assists and 31 points. That included a 1993 season in which he had seven goals, eight assists and 22 points in 18 games. His 22 points are tied for the third best mark in Sacramento State single-season history. His 11 career assists are tied for second in Sacramento State history despite playing just two years. After his college playing days, Baena played professionally in 1994-05 for TuS Hoisdorf of the German Third Division as well as the Sacramento Knights of the World Indoor Soccer League in 1999.
Current men’s soccer members of the MPSF include San Jose State, UNLV, New Mexico, Denver, Air Force and Sacramento State.
