MEN’S SOCCER GETS FIRST ROAD WIN, 3-2, IN 2OT AGAINST NORTHRIDGE

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— Men's soccer (4-3-1) won its first road game of the season when forward Sean Luigs’ shot passed through the posts in the 106th minute of double-overtime Friday night at North Campus Stadium.

The Matadors got on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute by Tony Ortega to give Northridge its only lead of the contest.

The Hornets answered right back as midfielder Matt Scammacca scored his first goal of the season in the 11th minute off an assist by defenseman Sean Melendez. Forward David Fraser’s goal in the 40th minute gave the Hornets a 2-1 advantage after one period.

Northridge evened it up again in the 83rd minute when Edwin Miranda found the net off an assist by Ortega to send the match into overtime.

Hornet goalkeeper Joey Hills earned his first victory on the season with seven saves.

After eight games, the Hornets have tied their best start since the 1992 season when the team finished 10-5-3 on the year.

The team will next travel to UC Santa Barbara to take on the Gauchos on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m.
