SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Hornet forward Sean Luigs’ goal in the 84th minute gave men's soccer a 2-1 win over the Lions of Vanguard in a game marred by penalties and physical play.
Vanguard finished the contest with 23 penalties including four yellow cards and one red card compared to the Hornets' 16 penalties and no cards.
Midfielder Levi Henson got the Hornets on the board first with a goal in the 47th minute off an assist by Matt Scammacca. Diego Goni evened the contest up for Vanguard with a goal in the 60th minute from teammate Ryan Rutkowski.
The win keeps the team (3-2-1) undefeated at Hornet Field with a 3-0-1 record. After six games, men's soccer is off to its best start since going 3-3 in the 1993 season.
The Hornets will next host San Jose State at Hornet Field on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m.
