MEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS NO. 2 SANTA CLARA IN DOUBLE OT
SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Reserve midfielder Danny Gehm scored with less than ten minutes remaining in double-overtime to give men's soccer a 2-1 victory over the No. 2 ranked Broncos of Santa Clara Friday night at Hornet Field.
Following a scoreless first period, Santa Clara struck quickly with a goal by Jamil Walker in the 48th minute. The Hornets rallied back late in the second period on a goal by Hjalti Kristjansson in the 77th minute to send the contest into a 15-minute, sudden-death period.
After a scorless opening period and darkness beginning to set in, Gehm entered the contest for the first time in the second overtime to replace tired legs. Five minutes later, he ended the defensive stalemate with a rebound goal in the 7th minute of double-overtime.
The Broncos entered the game as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation after finishing the 1999 regular season undefeated. Their only loss was a 1-0 defeat to Indiana in the National Finals.
The win gives the Hornets a 1-0 start for the first time in school history (1991-present).
The game also marked the first time men's soccer has ever defeated Santa Clara, after nine consecutive losses spanning over a decade.
