SANDOVAL SCORES AS MEN'S SOCCER ENDS DENVER'S SIX-MATCH WINNING STREAK IN 1-1 TIE
DENVER, Colo. – Sacramento State ended Denver’s six-match winning streak on Sunday, playing the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leaders to a 1-1 tie at Pioneer Field.Sacramento State (5-10-1, 2-4-1 MPSF) held a one-goal lead for the majority of the match after senior Oscar Sandoval scored his fifth goal of the season in the 11th minute.
Sandoval, Sacramento State’s leading scorer a year ago, received a pass from junior Eli Millan and buried his shot to the left corner. Millan, a 2003 Foothills High School graduate, has now scored a goal or added an assist in five of his last six matches. Slowed by an injury at the start of the season, Millan has registered four assists in his last four starts.
The Hornets were just 52 seconds away from dealing Denver (10-3-2, 6-0-1 MPSF) its first conference loss, but the Pioneers’ Greg Fiddick scored his second goal of the year in the 90th minute to send the match into overtime. Fiddick reached Colin Jones cross in the box and placed his shot over Hornet goalkeeper Ryan Kenny.
Kenny, a freshman from Fresno, Calif., made a career-high10 saves during the match to keep Denver off the scoreboard, including three stops in overtime. Denver goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft made eight saves.
The match ended with just nine players on the field for each team. Nine cards were handed out in regulation with Sandoval and Denver’s Kellan Christensen and Joey Mathot ejected in the 78th minute after receiving red cards. Hornet midfielder David Lopez was issued a red card in the 81st minute.
Millan now has three goals and six assists this season, while Kenny has a team-leading 43 saves.
Denver has surrendered only two goals to conference competition this season, both coming against Sacramento State. Hornet freshman Zlatan Kuckovic scored against the Pioneers during a 2-1 loss on Oct. 15 in Sacramento.
Sacramento State returns home for its final home games of the season, hosting New Mexico at 4 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 27 and UNLV at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29.
