VITAGLIANO SCORES GOLDEN GOAL AS 17TH-RANKED NEW MEXICO EDGES MEN'S SOCCER 1-0 IN OT

10/8/2006

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sacramento State held New Mexico scoreless for over 90 minutes, but couldn''t fully contain the 17th-ranked Lobos, who scored the game winner and the match''s lone goal in the 97th minute.

It was New Mexico''s Joey Vitagliano who was responsible for the Lobos'' 1-0 overtime victory, with a header off Stephen Brown''s cross in the box.

Sacramento State, playing in its second consecutive overtime match after a 2-1 win over UNLV on Friday, had to play the last 10 minutes of regulation and overtime with just 10 men after senior forward Eliot Ricks-Chambers received a red card in the 80th minute.

The Hornets fall to 4-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. New Mexico, the two-time defending conference champion, improve to 8-3-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the MPSF.

Freshman Ryan Kenny received the start in goal for Sacramento State and made five saves, while the Hornets took six shots during the match. Oscar Sandoval and Eli Millan, who scored the match-tying and game-winning goals against UNLV, led Sacramento State with two shots apiece.

The Hornets continue MPSF play next week at Hornet Soccer Field, hosting Air Force at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, and Denver at 12 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 15. Both matches will be doubleheaders with the women''s team.
