MEN’S SOCCER ANNOUNCES COMMITMENTS OF JOHNSON AND OCHOA FOR 2006

2/17/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men’s soccer program announced the signing of Shelby Johnson and Emmanuel Ochoa to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today.

Johnson, a local product out of Natomas High School, will enroll at the university in the fall of 2006. With the ability to play forward or on the back line, Johnson was named to the Sacramento Bee’s all-Metro first team after leading the Sierra Foothill Conference with 25 goals and seven assists.

Captain and team MVP of the Nighthawks, Johnson helped lead Natomas to an 11-4-2 record and was also named MVP of the SFL. He played his club soccer with River City United.

“Shelby can play as a forward or defender,” head coach Michael Linenberger said. “We expect him to get time off the bench his freshman year. We also expect him to be a starter by his sophomore year after losing three starters off our back line. He is a big, strong athletic player and is very versatile. We are excited to keep another one of Sacramento’s top players at home to play for the Hornets.”

Ochoa, a current senior at Sanger High School in Sanger, Calif., is the Apaches’ team captain and has scored 10 goals with 13 assists this season. As a junior in 2005, Ochoa was an all-county selection after scoring 16 goals and 14 assists and leading Sanger to its fist playoff appearance in school history. His first two years with the Apaches, he totaled 24 goals and 22 assists, earning all-league and team MVP honors.

From 2004-05, Ochoa competed with the California Odyssey Soccer Club. His 17 goals and 23 assists in the center of the midflied, helped the Odyssey to a 67-2-3 record, while winning the Cal North State Cup championship and the Super Y League Pacific region championship. The Odyssey also took second place at the Region IV championships, while Ochoa was a Super Y League Pacific Region ODP selection.

“Emmanuel is a very versatile player that can player anywhere on the back line or in the midfield,” Linenberger said. “He is a great all-around athlete. We expect him to play primarily in the midfield and challenge for a starting role in the central midfield, after losing seniors Ricky Rodriguez and Marco Ramirez.”

Ochoa, a two-sport athlete at Sanger, also played football for two seasons. This past fall, Ochoa was named offensive team MVP and played several positions on the field, including quaterback and defensive back while returning kicks and punts and also serving as the team’s kicker and punter.

He was an all-league selection at defensive back and also set school records with five consecutive kick off returns for touchdowns and a 48-yard field goal. The team captain passed for 800 yards, ran for 500 yards while collecting 42 tackles and three interceptions. His junior year, Ochoa again was an all-league selection and voted team MVP after totaling 956 yards (6.3 yards per carry.) Ochoa returned a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, setting a new school record while scoring 13 touchdowns, tallying 62 tackles and grabbing six interceptions

Sacramento State is coming off its best season since 1992. The Hornets finished 2005 with a 9-7-2 record and also maintained a program-record eight-match unbeaten streak on their home field. Linenberger was named co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the year and a program-record six players earned all-conference honors.
