BAGGETT, ECHEVERRIA AND MANTON NAMED TO MPSF MEN’S SOCCER ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

2/2/2006

WOODLAND, Calif. – Sacramento State juniors Ismael Echeverría and Jesse Manton, and sophomore Brandon Baggett were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Soccer Academic All-Conference Team, it was announced today.

The honor is given to student-athletes who have accumulated a 3.0 gpa or higher, are at least a sophomore academically and have played in at least half of the team’s contests while making a major contribution. The student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season for which the reward is being received.

It is the second consecutive year the trio has earned all-academic honors.

Baggett, in his third year with the program, is a business major with a 3.4 gpa. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native turned in his best season as a Hornet after recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the spring. The 5-foot-10 midfielder played in 15 matches and started the last two games of the season. He recorded his first career assist in a 4-0 shutout of Menlo on Sept. 21, before setting up the match-tying goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over UNLV on Nov. 4.

Echeverría, a 2003 graduate of Laguna Creek High School, is a civil engineering major with a 3.2 gpa. The 5-foot-11 defender was sidelined early with an ankle injury, but returned to the field, appearing in 12 games, including three starts.

Manton, a business management major with a 3.6 gpa, was a key contributor on the back line in 2005. The MPSF all-academic honor adds to the list for the Santa Rosa, Calif., native, who was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII first team and to the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Far West second team.

The 5-foot-11 left back was a big reason why the Hornets posted a program-record eight-match unbeaten streak on its home field this season, including four shutouts. Manton played in 15 matches, including 14 starts.

Sacramento State finished 2005 with its best record (9-7-2) since 1992 and had a record six players earn all-MPSF honors at the conclusion of the season.
