SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Eliot Ricks-Chambers was named co-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week after his two-goal performance for Sacramento State this weekend. The first-year player out of Cosumnes River CC made his first two starts of the season on the forward line and produced two game-tying goals, his first scores as a Hornet.
Ricks-Chambers, a 2002 Kennedy HS graduate, headed in the game-tying goal with less than two minutes left in regulation against UNLV on Friday, sending the match into overtime, where the Hornets’ went on to earn the 2-1 victory in extra time.
On Sunday, it was again Ricks-Chambers who put Sacramento State on the scoreboard against second-ranked New Mexico. In the 29th minute, the 5-foot-11 forward hit a volley past New Mexico goalkeeper Mike Graczyk to tie things up at 1-1 for the match’s eventual final score.
He shares the honor with Air Force goalkeeper Brian Guyette, who made eight saves and notched his fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Denver.
It is the fourth time this season a Hornet has earned the honor, with junior forward Oscar Sandoval receiving the honor twice (Oct. 3 and Oct. 24) and senior midfielder Marco Ramirez earning the honor on Sept. 19.
Sacramento State is now 9-6-2 overall this year, posting its best record since 1992. The Hornets also have a program-record eight-match undefeated streak at Hornet Field. They will attempt to extend that streak to nine games, playing their final match of the season at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 against MPSF leaders, San Jose State.
