RAMIREZ SCORES PENALTY KICK IN OVERTIME TO LEAD MEN'S SOCCER IN 2-1 VICTORY OVER UNLV

11/4/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Marco Ramirez’s penalty kick with 12 seconds remaining in overtime gave Sacramento State a 2-1 victory over UNLV on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets improve to 9-6-1 overall and 4-4-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while maintaining their undefeated record of 7-0-0 at home this year, a program record.

The Rebels fall to 2-14-0 on the season and 0-7-0 in the MPSF.

With less than 20 seconds remaining in the first period of overtime, senior Ricky Rodriguez sent a ball through the UNLV defense that set up junior forward Ryan Rhoads one-on-one with Rebel goalkeeper Brett Hafeman.

Rhoads touched the ball past Hafeman and was in alone before Hafeman pulled the Modesto, Calif., native down in the box, setting up Ramirez’ penalty kick. For Ramirez, in his second year out of Modesto JC, it was his fourth goal of the season and sixth of his career.

Sacramento State was down one goal early when a cross from UNLV in the fifth minute deflected off a Hornet defender and fell to the feet of Lamar Neagle, who tapped in the goal at the near post.

The Hornets battled back outshooting the Rebels 20-13, and picked up the equalizer with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore midfielder Brandon Baggett broke free of his defender on the left side and sent in a cross that found junior forward Eliot Ricks-Chambers. The Cosumnes River CC transfer, found an opening and headed the ball low to the far post, out of the reach of Hafeman. It was Ricks-Chambers first goal as a Hornet, sending the game into overtime.

Sacramento State had several opportunities to tie the match, with the most dangerous chance coming in the first five minutes of the second half when junior Utodi Madu unleashed a shot that hit the right post.

Senior goalkeeper Matt McDougall kept Sacramento State in the match with a game-high seven saves.

UNLV was down to 10 men after Ben Haugland received a red card in the 86th minute. Hafeman was also red-carded in the 100th minute for taking down Rhoads. Peter Clitheroe replaced Hafeman in goal for the penalty kick.

The Hornets will now host No. 2 New Mexico on Sunday at 1 p.m. Festivities kick off at 11 a.m. with a skills challenge for Hornet fans and kids can gain free entrance to the match by wearing a team jersey, Hornet green or by presenting a coupon.
