COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force’s Scott Muir scored the game winner in the 85th minute as the Falcons defeated Sacramento State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium.Air Force forward David Schill sent a pass into the penalty area that was deflected by a Hornet defender. After taking a high bounce, Muir was able to head in the loose ball before Sacramento State goalkeeper Matt McDougall could make the save.
The Falcons are now 6-8-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Hornets fall to 8-6-1 and 3-4-0 in league.
Sacramento State’s leading scorer Oscar Sandoval recorded his eighth goal of the season and evened the match at 1-1 in the 69th minute when he converted a penalty kick after a Hornet player was pulled down in the penalty box. A native of Littlerock, Calif., Sandoval’s eight goals now tie him for third as a single season record.
Colin Eames scored Air Force’s first goal in the 33rd minute to the lower right corner with the assist coming from Muir.
The match was intense, with seven yellow cards issued and 32 fouls committed. Each team took seven shots on goal, with the Hornets led by Marco Ramirez, Ryan Rhoads and Sandoval, who each recorded two shots on frame. Eames led the Falcons with three shots on goal.
McDougall made five saves during the match and Air Force goalkeeper Brian Guyette tallied six.
Sacramento State will now end its schedule playing its final three MPSF opponents at home, where the Hornets maintain an undefeated record of 6-0-0. The team will host UNLV on Friday, Nov. 4 at 2:30 p.m., before hosting No. 2 New Mexico at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.
