SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men''s soccer program signed Oscar Sandoval to a national letter of intent, it was announced today.Sandoval, who will enroll at Sacramento State in the fall of 2005, has spent the last two seasons at Moorpark College, a junior college located in Moorpark, Calif.
Sandoval, who will be an addition in the forward line for the Hornets, was named team MVP and scored 12 goals for the Raiders in 2004. Last season, he also helped Moorpark to a Western State Conference championship.
“We are bringing Oscar in to compete as a striker,” head coach Michael Linenberger said. “We expect him to score right away.”
Sandoval was named first-team all-Western State Conference in both 2003 and 2004. During his freshman season at Moorpark in 2003, he led the league in scoring with 18 goals. The mark was also fifth in the state. In addition to being named team MVP as a freshman, Sandoval was also named to the Far West Region’s first team.
“Oscar is an intelligent and skillful player who we expect to become one of the top fowards in the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation),” Linenberger said. “He will be a nice compliment to Ryan Rhoads up top.”
Rhoads led the Hornets in scoring last season with eight goals.
A graduate of Littlerock High School in Lancaster, Calif., Sandoval was named team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior. His final two years at Littlerock, he was named to the all-Golden League first team.
Sandoval’s addition now finalizes the Hornets’ 2005 signing class with six newcomers. Sacramento State previously signed Josh Zimbrich of Del Oro High School, Jeff Buddenbohn of St. Francis High School, David Lopez of Piner High School, Andrew Gangnuss of Amador Valley High School and Zach Tuss of Natomas High School.
