MEN'S SOCCER HAS FOUR PLAYERS NAMED AS MPSF ALL-ACADEMIC SELECTIONS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Four scholar-athletes on the Sacramento State men’s soccer team received Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic all-conference honors, it was announced on Monday, Jan. 3.

In order to be named as academic all-MPSF selections, players had to be at least a sophomore academically, have completed one full-year at Sacramento State prior to the start of the 2004 season, have competed in over 50 percent of his team’s games and have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

All of the Hornets named to the team were sophomores; forward Ryan Rhoads, midfielder Brandon Baggett and defenders Ismael Echeverría and Jesse Manton.

Rhoads, a kinesiology major, scored a team-high eight goals in 2004, notching all of them in MPSF play. The Modesto, Calif., native finished as the third leading scorer in the MPSF and scored three game-winning goals in 2004 over San Jose State (on two occasions) and San Diego State. He played in 17 games, starting 16.

Rhoads was also named student-athlete of the week from Oct. 18-24 after scoring two goals including the game-winner in 4-3 overtime win over San Jose State on Oct. 8.

After redshirting his freshman season due to a knee injury, Baggett, a business major, returned to the Hornet lineup as a key reserve in the midfield. The Santa Rosa, Calif., native played in 17 matches and used his speed to harass defenses.

Manton, a high school teammate of Baggett’s at Maria Carillo High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., returned from a concussion that ended his season early in 2003, to appear in 17 games including starting 11 in 2004. The business major also scored his first collegiate goal during the year at Air Force on Oct.1.

Echeverría proved to be one of Sacramento State’s most reliable defenders during the season, appearing in 19 games and starting 13. The Elk Grove, Calif., native also scored his second career goal and first career assist during the season. Echeverría’s goal came in a 2-1 overtime win over Air Force on Oct. 24. The Laguna Creek High School graduate was also named student-athlete of the week for the week of Nov. 1-8.
