Sacramento State lost its first match of the season at Hornet Soccer Field, when the Hornets fell 2-1 to Denver on Friday, Oct. 22. The Pioneers scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the match, but Sacramento State turned things around in the second half and began to create more scoring opportunities.
The Hornet defense held Denver to just one shot in the final 45 minutes, while sophomore Ryan Rhoads scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 71st minute, to bring the score to 2-1.
Junior Andrew Tamm came close to scoring the equalizer, but his goal was nullified after an offsides call.
On Sunday, Oct. 24 the Hornets rebounded to defeat Air Force, 2-1 in overtime. Sophomore Eli Millan scored his third game-winning goal of the season in the third minute of the second overtime period. Sophomore Pedro Lupercio served in a ball over the top of the defense, that Millan collected and shot over the top of a diving Falcon goalkeeper. Sophomore Ismael EcheverrÃa first put Sacramento State on the scoreboard in the 51st minute with his first goal of the season. EcheverrÃa caught the Air Force goalkeeper off his line as his shot floated in just under the crossbar.
Sacramento State now moves into third place in the MPSF with 12 points, behind New Mexico (16) and Denver (15)...the top two teams in the conference both took hits this weekend as the Lobos tied San Diego State 1-1 and the Pioneers fell 3-2 to San Jose State...Rhoads is third among goal scorers in the MPSF with five...Rhoads is also seventh in the conference in overall scoring, averaging 0.83 points per match...he leads the team with 10 points...Millan is eighth among goal scorers in the MPSF with four...junior Ricky Rodriguez is third among assist leaders in the MPSF with five...junior goalkeeper Matt McDougall leads the conference with 79 saves on the year, which is fourth all-time in program history for a single season...his 79 saves also rank him in the top-15 in all of Div.I golkeepers this season...senior defender Marcos Mercado is tied for third in program history with 60 career starts...Sacramento State is 4-0-1 when scoring first in matches this season and 1-8-0 when the opponent scores first.
The Hornets will go on the road after enjoying their last four matches at home, going 3-1-0. Sacramento State will travel to UNLV for a 7 p.m. match with UNLV on Friday, Oct. 29. The Rebels (4-9-0, 3-4) are tied for fourth place in the conference after a 3-0 loss to New Mexico on Thursday, Oct. 21. Sacramento State defeated UNLV by a score of 2-1 on Oct. 17 with goals from Rhoads and Millan. On Sunday, Oct. 31, the Hornets will travel to play San Diego State at 3 p.m. The Aztecs are coming off of a 1-1 tie with New Mexico, with a goal from Heath Creager. In the first round of conference competition, Rhoads and Tamm scored to give the Hornets a 2-0 win on Oct. 15.
