SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior forward Ricky Rodriguez was named Brine co-player of the week for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, after scoring two goals and tallying two assists in Sacramento State’s 4-3 overtime win over San Jose State. For the Hornets, it was their second win of the season and first victory in the MPSF. The win also kept Sacramento State’s undefeated record in 2004 at Hornet Soccer Field unblemished.
The Hornets came from behind at three different times during the match, before Rodriguez assisted on sophomore Ryan Rhoads’ game-winner in the 95th minute. Rodriguez, who is now second on the team in scoring with six points and ranked 19th in the MPSF, started the scoring for Sacramento State in the 30th minute.
Junior Marco Ramirez unleashed a shot that San Jose State goalkeeper Brent Douglas could not control, and Rodriguez alertly put the rebound into the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1. Early in the second half, Rodriguez, a Vacaville High School graduate, stole a pass at midfield and found a streaking Rhoads, who scored to tie the game at 2-2.
Rodriguez then put away a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into overtime. For Rodriguez, who has started at midfield and in the forward line in all 10 of Sacramento State’s matches, these were his first goals and assists on the season.
He shares the award with UNLV forward Rod Dyachenko, who scored game-winning goals in victories over Air Force and Denver.
Sacramento State will now get to enjoy a four-game homestand which starts this weekend. The Hornets will play San Diego State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 and then play UNLV at 1p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17.
