Former Sacramento State men’s soccer player Joe Enochs was selected as one of the Top-20 American Abroad by Soccer America, it was announced in the publication’s January issue. Enochs, a midfielder, was ranked 19th out of all Americans playing on teams in the top two levels of foreign leagues. The selection takes into account the player’s form and his club’s success (primarily in league play) and is based on the competitive level of the league in which they play.
Enochs, who currently plays for VFL Osnabruek in the Bundesliga 2 in Germany, has played professionally in the country since 1993. He began his career with FC St. Pauli in the German Third League before joining Osnabruek in 1997. Last season, Enochs helped lead Osnabruek to a promotion from Bundesliga 3 with a second-place finish in the league.
In May of 2001, Enochs was one of 33 players selected to compete for the U.S. National Team in Columbus, Ohio, against Ecuador. A midfielder with the Hornets from 1989-92, Enochs was the first player in school history to reach the national level of competition.
In his Hornet career, Enochs recorded nine goals, 15 assists and 32 points while starting all 71 games for head coach Michael Linenberger. Enochs was a member of the first Sacramento State Div. I squad in 1991 and also led the Hornet men’s soccer team to its best Div. I record in program history with a 10-5-3 mark in 1992. The Petaluma, Calif., native became the first Sacramento State player to receive postseason honors in the Div. I-era when he was named second team All-Far West Region as a junior in 1991.
