San Diego State’s Kevin Sapanli tallied two goals to lead the Aztecs to a 3-1 Mountain Pacific Federation Tournament win over the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, Thursday evening at Hornet Soccer Field. The match, which featured 608 fans under temporary lighting, was the second of a quarterfinal doubleheader at Sacramento State. The Hornets played under the lights for the first time since the 1986 season at Hornet Stadium.

The Aztecs, who were the No. 4 seed, raised their record to 9-7-3 overall. Sacramento State, which entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, ends its 2003 season at 5-11-2.

San Diego State got on the board first in the 4th minute when Sapanli recorded an unassisted goal.

Sacramento State answered back in the 19th minute when senior midfielder Sam Sneed connected on a goal from senior forward Pat Powers. Powers began the play by crossing a ball from the right side. Sneed climbed the ladder and headed a ball in to even the score. For Sneed, a native of Park City, Utah, it was his third goal of the season.

The Aztecs recaptured the lead in the 36th minute when Raul Baptiste tallied his third goal of the year on an assist by Eric Wohl. San Diego State put the game away in the 53rd minute after Sapanli recorded his second goal of the contest with an unassisted goal. For Sapanli, it was his fifth and sixth goals of the season, respectively.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt McDougall and Aztec goalkeeper Colin Hanke each finished with a game-high five saves. For McDougall, a native of Sacramento, it was his first action between the posts since breaking his finger on Oct. 3.

San Diego State will next face No. 1 San Jose State in the semifinals at Hornet Soccer Field on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. The MPSF Championship match will be on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 21.
