MERCADO, NELLE AND SNEED NAMED TO ALL-MPSF MEN'S SOCCER TEAM

Marcos Mercado, Patrick Nelle and Sam Sneed were each named to the all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation squad after leading the Sacramento State men’s soccer team to its third-consecutive MPSF Tournament appearance, it was announced today. Nelle was named to the second team while Mercado and Sneed received honorable mention honors.

Denver, New Mexico and San Jose State led the MPSF with five selections each while San Diego State (4), UNLV (4), Sacramento State (3) and Air Force (2) rounded out the rest of the federation. Senior forward Alex Hernandez (UNLV) and junior midfielder Marcus Sagustame (Air Force) were named MPSF Co-Players of the Year.

Nelle, a native of Sacramento, led the Hornets in scoring with a career-best three goals on the season. One of his goals served as the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Saint Mary’s and his remaining two goals came in a 3-2 win over Air Force. For Nelle, who receive all-conference honors for the first time, it marked the first two-goal performance of his career. The forward has now tallied seven goals, three assists and 16 points in three seasons.

Mercado, a native of Sacramento, received his second all-conference accolades after serving as one of the top defenders in the MPSF. Mercado appeared and started in 16 contests this year while tallying two goals and four points. In his career, Mercado has stared 48-of-51 matches while recording two goals, one assist and three points.

Sneed, a native of Park City, Utah, received his first all-conference honors after posting a team and personal-best seven points (two goals, three assists). His goal total places him second on the squad while his assists mark ranks second. The midfielder ends his Hornet regular-season career with 58 appearances, 26 starts, three goals, seven assists and 14 points. Sneed also earned MPSF all-academic honors in 2002.

Sacramento State, which earned its third-consecutive MPSF Tournament appearance, will play San Diego State under the lights on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field.
