MEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-0 CONTEST TO NO. 13 SANTA CLARA
Santa Clara scored one goal in the first half and once more in the second as the 13th ranked Broncos defeated the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, 2-0, Sunday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Hornets are now 2-8-1 on the year while the Broncos improved to 8-2-3. The match marked the second ranked opponent Sacramento State has faced this season.SCU dominated much of the play on the evening, taking 10 more shots than Sacramento State and getting five more corner kicks in the match. Of the Broncos'' 13 shots, 11 were on the face of the goal, compared to only two for the Hornets.
Will Weatherly scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 32nd minute as he took a crossing pass from Tannen Wels and slipped it past sophomore goalkeeper Matt McDougall for the 1-0 lead. The goal for Weatherly was his fourth on the season.
In the second half, the Broncos continued to put pressure on the Hornets'' defense, finally breaking through for an insurance goal in the 65th minute as Jeff Scott’s corner kick was headed backwards by Eric Irvine to Jason Pan who notched his first collegiate goal.
Santa Clara goalkeeper Steve Cronin picked up his fifth shutout of the season. McDougall collected a game-high nine saves.
Senior Sam Sneed, junior Patrick Nelle and freshman Ryan Rhodes each recorded a shot for the Hornets.
Sacramento State will next host Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m.
