MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO NO. 10 UC SANTA BARBARA, 3-0

9/28/2003

Neil Jones tallied two goals while Dan Kennedy recorded his fifth shutout to lead No. 10 UC Santa Barbara to a 3-0 win over the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The match marked the first ranked opponent for the Hornets this season.

Sacramento State is now 2-6-1 overall while the Gauchos raised their record to 7-0-1.

UC Santa Barbara got on the board first in the 37th minute when Memo Arzate tallied a goal off of assists by Corey Wood and David McGill. Wood began the play by leading a pass to McGill in the middle of the field. McGill dribbled twice and placed a pass to the left side. Arzate collected the pass and struck a ball at Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall. The ball struck McDougall’s finger tips after a stretch to the right but continued into the net for the score.

The Gauchos added to their lead after a goal by Jones in the 46th minute. Arzate struck a ball at McDougall, who made a diving stab to block the shot. Jones, who was in the keeper box, collected the deflection and flicked a shot into the open net.

Jones would add his final goal of the contest in the 71st minute off an assist by Drew McAthy. McAthy corralled the ball with a defender on his back on the left side of the Hornet goal. He then struck the ball with his heel towards a streaking Jones who collected the pass and drilled a shot to the right post for the score.

McDougall, a native of Sacramento, finished with a game-high seven saves.

UC Santa Barbara out shot Sacramento State by a margin of 22-6.

The Hornets will next travel to San Francisco to face the Dons on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in Negoesco Stadium.
