WOODLAND, Calif. – Sacramento State juniors Justin Ancheta and Hjalti Kristjansson, and senior Leo Marin were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Soccer Academic All-Conference Team, it was announced today.The honor is given to student-athletes who have accumulated a 3.0 gpa or higher, are at least a sophomore academically and have played in at least half of the team’s contests while making a major contribution. The student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season for which the reward is being received.
Ancheta, a native of Meadow Vista, Calif., played in 15 contests including two starts as an outside midfielder for the Hornets. The junior recorded an assist in the Hornets’ 3-2 win over New Mexico on Oct. 26. A two-time academic all-conference selection, Ancheta currently has a 3.16 gpa.
Kristjansson, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, started all 18 contests as a defensive midfielder. The junior placed tied for third on the squad with three goals and two assists while also placing third with eight points. All of Kristjansson’s goals came from indirect free kicks. In 2000, Kristjansson became the first Hornet to receive first team all-conference honors since 1997. A two-time all-MPSF selection, Kristjansson currently has a 3.1 gpa.
Marin, a native of Roseville, Calif., started 14 games at goalkeeper for the Hornets during the 2001 season. The senior led the squad with two shutouts, 53 saves and a save percentage of .707. In his Hornet career, Marin tallied 69 saves, two shutouts and a goals-against-average of 1.69. His career stats place him sixth in program history in saves (69) and third in goals-against-average (1.73). Marin currently has a 3.02 gpa.
Sacramento State completed the 2001 season with the most wins and best overall record in conference play (4-1-2) since joining the MPSF in 1992. The Hornets also earned their first regular season conference championship in the Div. I era.
