FRESNO, Calif. -- Senior forward Ty Hibbard’s goal in the 103rd minute of overtime gave New Mexico a 3-2 victory over the Sacramento State men’s soccer team in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament Thursday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.The Hornets finish the 2001 season with a 5-9-4 overall record. The Lobos raised their record to 4-11-2.
Sacramento State got on the board first when junior defender Hjalti Kristjansson scored on an indirect kick from 20 yards out in the second minute. For Kristjansson, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, it was his third goal of the season.
The Hornets added their second goal of the contest in the fourth minute when senior forward Sean Luigs scored on an assist by sophomore forward David Fraser. Luigs found the net from 10 yards out on the right side of the Lobos goal.
New Mexico cut the deficit in half with a goal in the 11th minute by junior midfielder Junro Narita. Narita received a pass on the left side of the Hornet goal on a cross by Hibbard.
The teams remained scoreless until Hibbard scored off an assist by Junot Williams to force the contest into overtime. Hibbard then ended the contest in overtime with an unassisted goal.
Luigs, a native of Stockton, Calif., finishes his Hornet career with 17 career goals, eight assists and 43 points. His career totals place him third in goals scored and tied for second in points in the program record book. The forward’s team-high eight goals and 21 points in 2001 place him third and fifth, respectively, in the season record book.
Goalkeepers Chris Haustein and Leo Marin, midfielders Vjeko Odich, Danny Gehm and Erik Ocampo, and defenders Jason Gantt and Andy Hashimoto also played in the final contest of their Hornet careers.
Fraser, a native of Danville, Calif., ended the season second on the team with seven goals, three assists and 17 points.
Sacramento State finishes the 2001 season with its first postseason appearance in the Div. I era (1991-present) and its first regular season conference title. The Hornets also concluded the regular season with their most conference wins and best overall finish since joining the MPSF in 1992. Sacramento State new team records for ties in a season (4), overtime matches (8) and conference wins (4) while tying the program record for unbeaten streak on the road (3) and overall unbeaten streak (4).
