SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sophomore forward David Fraser’s goal in the 78th minute gave the Sacramento State men’s soccer team a 3-2 win over New Mexico in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest, Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The Hornets are now 3-6-4 overall and 2-1-2 in MPSF play while the Lobos are 3-6-4, 0-4-1. The Hornets recorded their best start to conference play since the Div. I era (1991-present).
New Mexico scored the first points of the contest in the 33rd minute when midfielder Itzik Rapaport found the net on an assist by teammate Danny Bills. Bills had crossed a pass from the right side for the wide open opportunity.
Sacramento State answered back in the 45th minute when freshman forward Patrick Nelle scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from junior midfielder Justin Ancheta. Nelle, a native of Sacramento, received the pass from Ancheta and headed it past New Mexico’s goalkeeper Andrew Weber.
In the second half, the Lobos gained their second advantage in the 62nd minute after midfielder Junro Narita scored on a pass by teammate Stian Eriksen.
The Hornets tied the contest in the 67th minute when senior forward Sean Luigs scored on a penalty kick. The shot was set up after Fraser had been tackled in the goalie box on a header attempt..
Fraser then gave Sacramento State the lead for good after set ups by senior midfielder Danny Gehm and sophomore midfielder Joel Rodriguez.
The team will next travel to UNLV at noon on Sunday, Oct. 28, to take on the Rebels at Peter Johann Memorial Field. With a win, the Hornets will set a new program record for conference wins in a season.
