FRESNO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State men’s soccer team and Fresno State ended with a 1-1 tie during a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Thursday evening at Bulldog Stadium.

The Hornets are now 2-6-3 overall and 1-1-1 in MPSF play while the Bulldogs are 3-4-6, 0-1-2.

Each team remained scoreless until the 82nd minute when Fresno State forward Forrest Smith found the net off an assist by teammate Mat Herold. After a shot deflection in front of the Hornet goal, Herold found Smith on the right side for the open attempt.

The Hornets answered back in the final seconds of regulation when senior forward Sean Luigs capitalized on a break away opportunity in the 89th minute. Luigs, who recorded his team-high fourth goal, ran down a lead pass by junior defender Nick Whittaker to send the game into overtime. The Hornets are now 2-1-1 in games that Luigs records a goal.

With the overtime contest, Sacramento State tied a Div. I program record for extra period games in a season with six. The mark, previously held by the 1992 squad, came in the Hornets first season of Div. I play.

Fresno State goalkeeper Jeremy Proud finished with a game-high five saves.

The team will next travel to San Jose State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, to take on the Spartans at Spartan Stadium.
