SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Senior forward Sean Luigs connected on a penalty kick in the 57th minute to give the Hornet men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Denver, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. It was the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win for the Hornets this season. The Hornets raised their record to 2-6-2 overall and 1-1 in MPSF play while the Pioneers dropped to 6-4-3, 0-2.
Both teams remained scoreless until Sacramento State freshman defender Alexis Maúrtua was tackled in the goalie box by Denver keeper Parker Jarvis. Maúrtua was attempting to collect a deflection after he and Jarvis got tangled on a break away. Luigs took the penalty kick and scored the only goal of the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Chris Haustien, who started in place of an injured Leo Marin (concussion), recorded his first victory of the season for the Hornets.
Luigs, a native of Stockton, Calif., now has three goals and eights points on the season.
The team will next travel to Fresno State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, to take on the Bulldogs at Bulldog Stadium.
