CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Junior forward Aaron McHardy’s goal in the 109th-minute gave host Oregon State a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Sacramento State men’s soccer team in the first game of the Oregon State Diadora Classic, Friday evening at Paul Lorenz Field. The Hornets fell to 1-2-1 on the season while the Beavers raised their record to 1-4.
Oregon State’s Ross Duncan got the Beavers on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute off assists by teammates McHardy and Alex Close. Sacramento State evened the score in the 50th-minute when senior forward Sean Luigs scored from five feet out, past a diving Peter Billmeyer.
The Beavers gained the advantage again in the 64th-minute when A.J. Weber scored on a cross pass by Ignacio Sid. Luigs forced the contest into its first overtime period with a penalty-kick goal in the 74th-minute. Both teams went scoreless in the first overtime period.
Luigs, a native of Stockton, Calif., now leads the team with three goals on the season.
The Hornets will next take on Gonzaga at noon on Sunday, Sept. 21, in the final day of tournament play.
