MEN'S SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH 1-0 OVERTIME LOSS TO SAINT MARY'S

8/31/2001

MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's freshman Brian Kummer's goal in the 99th minute gave the Gaels a 1-0 victory over the men's soccer team in overtime Friday afternoon at Garaventa Field. The game marked the season opener for both teams.

Each team had several opportunities to end the game in regulation but could not capitalize.

The best opportunity came in the 89th minute as Saint Mary's forward Scott Phipps beat Hornet goalkeeper Chris Haustein to a loose ball on the right side but could only watch as his shot veered wide right of the open goal.

The Hornets pressured early in the overtime period but could not convert as defender Nick Whittaker's attempt to flip a shot over Gael goalkeeper Kellan Wilson failed.

Saint Mary's sealed the contest when Kummer gathered a wide-open rebound off a lofted penalty kick in front of the Sacramento State goal.

Haustein and Wilson each played the entire contest and finished with four and five saves, respectively.

The Hornets will next take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, at Hornet Soccer Field.
