GOALS FROM GOVEA AND ALFARO LIFT MEN’S SOCCER TO SEASON-OPENING 2-0 WIN AT SAN JOSE STATE

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Sacramento State men's soccer team opened the regular season with an exciting 2-0 win on the road at San Jose State. Oscar Govea and Genaro Alfaro both found the back of the net in the win.

Sacramento State (1-0) traveled to the Bay Area to take on the Spartans of San Jose State (0-1) Friday night after playing two exhibition matches at home at Hornet Field. Despite seeing their first road action of the year, the Hornets jumped on San Jose State early thanks to an Oscar Govea goal in the 30th minute of play.

The goal came after a pass from Matthew Korpontinos found Govea at the top of the box. Govea punched it in to give the Hornets an early 1-0 advantage. The assist was the first in a Hornets uniform for Korpontinos.

It was just three minutes later when the Hornets attack found success again as newcomer Genaro Alfaro scored his first career goal in the 33rd. Arath Chavez found Alfaro in space, and the freshman's goal doubled the Hornets lead. Like Korpontinos before him, the assist was also a career-first for Chavez.

The Hornets took the 2-0 lead into the half and held on for the final 45 minutes of play, securing the victory.

In total, Sacramento State piled up 10 shots – five in each the first and second half – placing six of them on frame.

Two goals was more than enough for Sacramento State on Friday night, as the defense, led by sophomore keeper Ryan Curtis, kept the Spartans off the scoreboard for 90 minutes.

It wasn't always easy for the backline, as San Jose State took 17 total shots in the contest, placing 10 of them on frame. Curtis recorded eight saves in the win (matching his season high) and the Hornets defense backed him up, making two team saves to preserve the shutout.

Sacramento State drew two yellow cards in the match, one to Alejandro Alcantara in the 76th minute and another to Korpontinos in the 79th. San Jose State also saw a yellow in the 86th.

The win is Sacramento State's first win in a season-opener since 2013, when they beat San Jose State, also on the road, 1-0 in double overtime.

For the Hornets, the opening weekend of competition continues on the road. Sacramento State heads next to the West Coast Conference's Gonzaga for a Sunday night match against the Bulldogs. Sunday's contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
