SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State men's soccer program has signed two more players to the program, head coach Mike Linenberger announced Friday. The Hornets have signed Axel Ramirez and Genaro Alfaro to a National Letter of Intent.
Axel Ramirez - Fr. - MF - Merced, Calif. / Merced HS
Ramirez is from Merced, Calif., and joins the Hornets out of Merced High School. An incoming freshman, Ramirez has already spent time with the Merced Soccer Academy, the Seattle Sounders FC Academy, and the Sacramento Republic FC Academy.
Ramirez played two seasons for the Merced High School Bears, where he was named his team's MVP. At the same time, Ramirez played 11 seasons for the Merced Soccer Academy. During his time with the club, Ramirez was part of three tournament championships, including the Santa Clara Sporting Cup and the Vegas Cup in 2017 and the Copa Zorros in 2016.
In addition to playing locally with Merced HS and the Merced Soccer Academy, Ramirez has spent time with the Seattle Sounders Academy team and the Sacramento Republic FC Academy team. Ramirez appeared in three games with the Sounders Academy club in 2017-18 before moving back home to join the Republic Academy team.
Last season, Ramirez played in 15 games and made 12 starts for the Sacramento Republic FC Academy team. He also scored four goals.
"We are excited to add Axel to our list of commitments," said Linenberger. "He is a versatile attacking player that can play in central midfield or on the wings. We expect him to contribute right away as a freshman."
Ramirez is the seventh player to sign with the Sacramento State men's soccer program this offseason and the eight addition overall.

Genaro Alfaro - Fr. - D - Sacramento, Calif. / Natomas HS
Alfaro is from right here in Sacramento and joins the Hornets out of Natomas High School. Alfaro has played primarily as a left or right back, but possesses the versatility and athleticism to play multiple positions.
A 2019 graduate of Natomas High School, Alfaro played the last four seasons with the Sacramento Republic FC Academy team. He joined the academy team in its first year for the 2014-15 season. Over the course of his four years with the club, Alfaro has spent time at right back, left back, and center back.
In total, Alfaro has played in 98 games with academy team and has started 81 of them. Alfaro started a career-best 24 games in each of the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons. He started all 24 games in both seasons. During the 2017-18 season, Alfaro scored a goal and added an assist against the San Jose Earthquakes.
"We are excited to add another top local player to our 2019 recruiting class," said head coach Mike Linenberger of his team's latest addition. "Genaro provides us with another quality student-athlete that can play wide on the left or wide on the right. He is also versatile enough that he can play in the back, in the midfield, or on the wing."
Alfaro is the eighth player to sign with the Sacramento State men's soccer program his season and the ninth addition overall.
